Today was my last day at the deli. Funny how someplace I despised and detested at first ultimately turned into someplace that I'm going to miss. This job had many lessons in it for me.
First, was about humility and my lack of it, unbeknownst to me until now. I found myself being embarrassed to tell people that I worked in a deli as my primary source of income. It showed me I have judgment issues that I've not completely overcome yet.
It was hard to accept this job and to accept the amount of pay it offered. It also taught me that there are people out there that work hard and don't and won't ever make more than $6.50 an hour; I have no idea how they can do it!
It showed me that (at least at Jasons Deli) Mexican culture is energetic, hard-working and spirited...I also now understand a lot of restaurant Spanish (you never know, that might benefit me someday)! I, unfortunately, also get the impression that there is not a lot of work ethic among younger people today. I think that the management was surprised that I gave notice instead of pulling a "no call/no show" as most ex-employees do when they choose not to work there anymore. How do you change that? Is it a parental teaching or other?
